Appointment Committee of Cabinet has cleared the name of Shashi Shanker the present Director (Technical and Field Services) of state-run ONGC for the post Chairman of ONGC. Shankar’s term will be till March 2021. it may be the first time that ONGC CMD will not have complete five year term.

Soft-spoken and man of few words, Shanker likes to keep a low profile. He became the youngest member of the ONGC’s board of directors in December 2012. He will have nearly four years to go as ONGC chairman till he retires in March 2021.

A graduate in petroleum engineering from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, and MBA with specialisation in financial management from IGNOU, Shanker has been with ONGC for three decades, handling key assignments in various streams of exploration business. He is credited with introducing a new technical approach to deep-sea drilling and ushering in a paradigm shift in contracting.

According to government procedure, the oil ministry will now have to accept PESB’s choice and get Shanker’s name vetted by anti-corruption watchdogs before recommending him to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister, who will have the final word.

A student of St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi, Shanker has also done general management training at IIM, Lucknow, and leadership development programme at ISB, Hyderabad, under the institute’s “Shangsaptak” programme.
