NMDC Steel becomes first Indian company to receive BIS license for pipeline-grade steel

State-owned NMDC Steel Limited (NSL) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Indian company to receive the Indian Standards (IS) license for hot rolled steel strip, sheet, and plates for pipeline transportation systems.

The prestigious IS 18384:2023 certification was conferred by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) during the World Standards Day 2025 celebration held at Raipur on October 16. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai presented the certification to Amrit Narayan, Chief General Manager (Steel), NMDC.

The recognition underscores NMDC Steel’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainable development. It also reinforces the company’s vision to produce world-class steel products that meet the highest standards of safety and performance, particularly for the petroleum and natural gas sectors.

Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC Steel, said, “We are proud to be the first in India to receive this BIS license. It is a testament to our dedication to excellence and our contribution towards strengthening India’s industrial standards and infrastructure.”

NSL operates a 3 million tonne per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant at Nagarnar in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh under the Ministry of Steel. Since commencing commercial production on August 31, 2023, the company has rapidly positioned itself as a key player in India’s steel industry.

Reflecting its strong operational performance, NMDC Steel reported a revenue of ₹8,503.05 crore in FY25, marking a remarkable 179% growth over ₹3,048.99 crore in FY24. The achievement further strengthens NMDC Steel’s leadership in technological advancement, superior product quality, and sustainable manufacturing practices.
