Manohar Lal Commences COD of Tehri PSP’s 3rd Unit, Boosting Clean Energy Transition

By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM|Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, inaugurated the COD of the third unit of THDCIL’s 1000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant at Tehri, marking a major stride in India’s clean-energy transition. With the first two units already operational, the third unit strengthens the project’s position as India’s first and largest variable-speed PSP implemented by a central public-sector enterprise. The ceremony, attended by key leaders from the power sector, highlighted the project’s role in ensuring reliable round-the-clock power supply amid rising national demand.

Addressing the gathering, the minister emphasised the importance of storage-driven assets in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. Leaders including Shripad Naik, A K Sharma, Pankaj Agarwal, Ghanshyam Prasad, Gurdeep Singh and others praised THDCIL’s technical excellence and its contribution to renewable-integrated grid stability.

Sipan Kumar Garg, CMD, THDCIL, expressed gratitude for the collective support that enabled commissioning of the third unit, which provides an additional 750 MW generation and 750 MW pumping capacity. The Tehri PSP, demonstrating around 80 percent round-trip efficiency, represents a vital leap in advanced hydropower and reinforces India’s commitment to a clean, flexible and future-ready energy system.

Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC, while congratulating the THDCIL team, highlighted that this achievement marks a significant moment for the power sector. Also present at the occasion were L.P. Joshi, CTO, THDCIL, Kumar Sharad, ED (Projects), THDCIL, Neeraj Verma, Executive Director (I/C NCR), M. K. Singh, CGM (TC), Dr. A. N. Tripathy, CGM (HR-Admin, CC) along with senior officials from THDCIL and representatives from the project consortium comprising GE Vernova, HCC, and other key stakeholders from the power sector.
