By Abul Hasan|THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA| The Government of India has entrusted Sajid Farid Shapoo, IPS (1998), with the additional charge of Chief Vigilance Officer of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE/GIL), Troop Comforts Ltd. (TCL), Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Ltd. (AWEIL) and India Optel Ltd. (IOL). Shapoo currently serves as CVO, Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML), Bengaluru. The additional responsibility follows the premature repatriation of Pankaj Gupta, ITS (1995), and will remain in force for six months or until a regular appointment is made, whichever is earlier.
Widely regarded as one of the most decorated officers of his batch, Shapoo brings to the assignment an exceptional blend of operational policing, counter-terrorism expertise and strategic insight. An IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, he has held several sensitive field and leadership positions, including Superintendent of Police in Bhind, Satna, Shivpuri and Dewas, where he earned a reputation for firm yet people-centric policing.
Shapoo was among the first officers inducted into the National Investigation Agency in 2009. During his tenure at NIA, he led the Investigation Branch and later headed the Intelligence and Operations Division as Deputy Inspector General, supervising multiple high-profile terrorism-related cases with national and international ramifications.
Before joining BEML as CVO, he served the Madhya Pradesh government in critical roles such as Inspector General of Law & Order, Inspector General of Anti-Naxal Operations, and Additional Director General of Special Armed Forces, handling some of the most challenging internal security assignments in the state.
His distinguished career has been recognised with several top honours, including the President’s Police Gallantry Medal on two occasions, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the Home Minister’s Meritorious Service Medal.
Academically accomplished, Shapoo holds a PhD in Security Studies from Princeton University and a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University, with specialisation in Middle East and international security policy. His additional vigilance responsibilities across strategic defence PSUs are expected to further strengthen governance, transparency and integrity in these critical institutions.
