Odisha: Where Heritage Breathes and Development Speaks
By Rajesh Saxena, Senior Journalist, Bhopal

Travel often becomes meaningful when it offers more than sightseeing—when it opens windows to history, governance and living culture. As a member of the journalists’ delegation from Madhya Pradesh, organised by the Press Information Bureau, Bhopal, my recent visit to Odisha unfolded as a deeply enriching experience. The journey revealed a state where ancient heritage coexists gracefully with progressive administration and visionary development.

Our first encounter was with the awe-inspiring Konark Sun Temple, a 13th-century architectural masterpiece built by King Narasimhadeva I. Standing before the grand chariot-shaped temple dedicated to the Sun God, one cannot help but marvel at the intricate carvings etched on its stone walls. From depictions of celestial bodies and deities to scenes of warfare and daily life, every sculpture narrates a story of a civilisation at the height of artistic excellence. The temple, preserved as a World Heritage monument, reflects Odisha’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its archaeological treasures.

Equally captivating was our visit to the sacred Jagannath Temple in Puri, one of Hinduism’s revered Char Dhams. The temple complex resonates with profound spiritual energy. Its architectural grandeur and religious traditions continue uninterrupted through centuries. The famed temple kitchen, where offerings are still prepared in earthen pots over wood-fired chulhas, stands as a testament to living traditions thriving even in an age of modern science. The disciplined management and supportive security arrangements showcased the Odisha government’s dedication to ensuring smooth pilgrim experiences.

Nature revealed its splendour at Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon. A serene boat ride across its shimmering waters introduced us to a vibrant ecosystem of aquatic species and migratory birds that flock here in winter. The conservation efforts undertaken jointly by the Union Ministry of Environment and the Odisha government underline a balanced approach to tourism and ecological preservation.

History came alive at Dhauli Hill, the site of the historic Kalinga War in 261 BCE. It was here that Emperor Ashoka, moved by the devastation of war, embraced Buddhism and the path of non-violence. The Shanti Stupa atop the hill symbolises peace and transformation—values that continue to inspire generations.

Beyond heritage, Odisha’s governance model left a lasting impression. The World Skill Center in Bhubaneswar, established in 2021, is empowering youth through world-class technical training in disciplines ranging from mechatronics to precision engineering. By heavily subsidising education and ensuring placement opportunities, the state is investing decisively in human capital.

Our visit to CTTC and the ICMR Regional Medical Research Centre Bhubaneswar further highlighted Odisha’s emphasis on research, innovation and public health. These institutions are nurturing skilled professionals and advancing scientific research to address regional and national challenges.

The journey concluded in Cuttack at the birthplace of Subhas Chandra Bose. Standing in the house where Netaji once walked was a humbling reminder of Odisha’s profound contribution to India’s freedom struggle.

Odisha is not merely a state to be visited; it is a narrative to be understood. Its temples speak of timeless faith, its landscapes celebrate nature’s generosity, and its institutions reflect forward-looking governance. For us, this journey was not just reportage—it was a revelation.
