In a significant development for India’s policing and civil services framework, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has notified the category-wise, cadre-wise and Insider–Outsider distribution of vacancies in the Indian Police Service (IPS) to be filled through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
According to an official communication issued by the Police-I Division (IPS-IV Desk) of the Ministry of Home Affairs on 29 May 2026, a total of 147 IPS vacancies have been earmarked across various state cadres and joint cadres. The notification has been circulated to Chief Secretaries of participating states, the Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad, and the UPSC.
The vacancy distribution reflects the Government’s continuing efforts to strengthen policing capacities across the country while maintaining the established Insider–Outsider cadre allocation policy and reservation norms. Of the 147 vacancies, 49 are Insider vacancies and 98 are Outsider vacancies. Category-wise, the vacancies comprise 74 Unreserved (including EWS), 41 OBC, 22 Scheduled Caste (SC), and 10 Scheduled Tribe (ST) posts.
Among the cadres, West Bengal has been allotted the highest number of vacancies with 15 posts, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 14 vacancies, Uttar Pradesh with 12, and Assam-Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh with 11 vacancies each. Maharashtra has been allotted 10 vacancies, while Tamil Nadu has received 9 and Bihar 8.
The AGMUT cadre—covering Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories—has been allocated 4 vacancies. Several smaller cadres such as Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura and Uttarakhand have been allotted two vacancies each. Notably, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh have not been allocated any vacancies in the present distribution.
The MHA has clarified that the allocation has been made in accordance with the provisions of the Department of Personnel and Training’s cadre allocation guidelines. The detailed vacancy matrix has also been made available on the Ministry’s official website under the IPS Cadre Management section.
The notification sets the stage for the allocation of successful Civil Services Examination 2024 candidates to various IPS cadres, a process that plays a crucial role in shaping the future leadership of policing and internal security administration across the country.
