Chhattisgarh to Lead National Showcase of Water Management Best Practices

By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA| Chhattisgarh is set to take a prominent role at the 9th India International Water Week (IIWW-2026), with the State invited by the Ministry of Jal Shakti to chair the session on “Best Practices” at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
The international water summit, being held from September 22 to 26 on the theme “Climate Resilient Water Management”, brings together stakeholders to discuss emerging challenges and practical solutions in water conservation, governance and climate adaptation. The Netherlands and Germany are the partner countries.
Rajesh Sukumar Toppo, IAS, Secretary, Water Resources Department, Government of Chhattisgarh, has been invited to chair the Best Practices session on September 24. Atul Jain, former Chairman, Central Water Commission, will serve as Co-Chair.
Anchored by the National Water Mission, the session will showcase field-tested water management models from different parts of the country, including Tripura, Andhra Pradesh and Surat. The discussions are expected to highlight approaches that have demonstrated practical outcomes in water conservation, climate adaptation and community participation.
For Chhattisgarh, the invitation comes as the State participates as a Partner State at IIWW-2026. Its community-led initiatives under Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari have received national recognition, bringing the State’s grassroots approach to water conservation into wider policy discussions.
The session also provides Chhattisgarh an opportunity to present its field experience before a national and international audience while learning from successful initiatives implemented elsewhere.
Toppo has acknowledged the contribution of engineers, district teams and village communities behind the State’s water-management initiatives, underlining the importance of field-level participation in creating sustainable water solutions.
With climate variability placing increasing pressure on water resources, the exchange of tested practices between States can help strengthen approaches to conservation, water security and resilient governance.
Chhattisgarh’s participation at IIWW-2026 thus places its community-oriented water management experience within a broader national conversation on building climate-resilient and sustainable water systems.
