By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM| The Gujarat Government has appointed senior IAS officer Ajay Bhadoo as Managing Director of the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) Ltd., bringing an experienced administrator back to the state after a significant tenure in key positions at the Centre.

A 1999-batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Bhadoo was recently repatriated to the state government and placed at the disposal of the Industries and Mines Department for his new assignment. His appointment also brings a change in the leadership arrangement at GMDC, with Roopwant Singh, IAS, being relieved of the additional charge of Managing Director.

Bhadoo returns to Gujarat after serving on central deputation in several important assignments. Prior to his repatriation, he was Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce and had also served as Chief Executive Officer of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), a position he took up in March 2025. His central government experience also includes assignments as Deputy Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India and Joint Secretary in the President’s Secretariat.

His administrative experience in Gujarat is equally diverse. During his earlier state postings, Bhadoo served as Municipal Commissioner of Vadodara, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Gujarat Maritime Board, Secretary to the Chief Minister, Municipal Commissioner of Rajkot and District Collector of Mehsana.

These assignments have given him exposure to urban administration, infrastructure, maritime development, public policy, district administration and government operations. His experience across both state and central governments comes at a time when the minerals sector remains an important component of Gujarat’s industrial and economic landscape.

GMDC, a major state-owned mining enterprise, has a significant role in Gujarat’s mineral development and industrial ecosystem. The corporation is engaged in mineral exploration, mining and related activities, with lignite, bauxite and other minerals forming part of its operational portfolio.

Bhadoo’s academic background complements his administrative career. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s in Business Law from the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru.

His return to the Gujarat administration and appointment at GMDC marks another significant chapter in a career that has spanned district administration, urban governance, maritime development, the President’s Secretariat, election administration, commerce and digital public procurement.

At GMDC, his combination of field-level administrative experience and exposure to national-level policy and institutional assignments is expected to shape his approach to the corporation’s ongoing responsibilities and future priorities.
