GST Council Recommends Major Relief in Enforcement Provisions

The 57th GST Council has recommended a series of measures to ease compliance and rationalise enforcement provisions. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the Council recommended removing arrest powers under GST and raising the prosecution threshold from ₹1 crore to ₹5 crore. It also recommended reducing the general penalty from ₹25,000 to ₹10,000. Sharing details during the media interaction on the outcomes of the 57th GST Council Meeting, Sitharaman posted the key decisions on her official X handle, @nsitharaman. The recommendations are aimed at reducing compliance burdens, limiting unnecessary litigation and providing greater certainty to businesses under the GST framework.
