In a milestone moment for Indian politics, Amit Shah on Tuesday became the longest-serving Union Home Minister in the country’s history, completing 2,258 days in office and surpassing the previous record held by Lal Krishna Advani. The achievement coincided with the sixth anniversary of one of Shah’s most historic policy moves—the abrogation of Article 370.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting, congratulated Shah on this landmark and lauded his leadership, describing him as a “pillar of strength in India’s transformative journey.” Modi noted that under Shah’s tenure, the BJP-led government has strived to implement the Constitution in its truest sense, echoing the vision of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

The Prime Minister’s remarks weren’t just ceremonial; they were a reflection of a tenure that has been bold, decisive, and deeply consequential. Amit Shah’s stewardship of the Ministry of Home Affairs has been characterised by firm internal security policies, high-impact legislation, and a vision to unify the country’s governance structure more tightly under constitutional provisions.

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya highlighted the achievement on social media, stating:

“Shri Amit Shah becomes the longest-serving Union Home Minister in India’s history. With 2,258 days in office, he has now surpassed Shri Lal Krishna Advani’s tenure of 2,256 days.”

Amit Shah took over the Home Ministry in 2019, during the second term of the Modi government. Within months, he spearheaded the move to abrogate Article 370, ending Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and integrating it fully into the Indian Union. That single decision not only altered the region’s political landscape but also signalled a new era in national security and constitutional uniformity.

His tenure also saw a relentless crackdown on terrorism, bolstering of internal security forces, and the pursuit of structural reforms in policing. From strengthening border security to streamlining intelligence operations, Shah’s role in redefining the country’s internal resilience has been widely noted.

Another key initiative has been the government’s resolve to eliminate Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). Shah has set a target of March 2026 to root out Maoism entirely, asserting that the fight against internal insurgency remains one of his top priorities.

Notably, before Shah and Advani, the longest-serving Home Minister was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s Iron Man, who held the post for 1,218 days. That Shah has now exceeded even those historical benchmarks reflects the continuity and strength of his political presence in the Modi-led administration.

This development comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself became the longest-serving Prime Minister in India, surpassing Indira Gandhi. Together, Modi and Shah have redefined the contours of Indian governance, with a sharp focus on national integration, internal security, and constitutional clarity.

As Amit Shah crosses this political milestone, his tenure is not just being measured in days, but in decisive moments that have left an indelible impact on India’s political and security landscape.
