Amitava Mukherjee has been appointed as the full-time Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NMDC Limited, the state-owned iron ore producer, effective March 6, 2025. His tenure will run until February 28, 2028, or until further notice, whichever occurs first.
Mukherjee, who joined NMDC as Director (Finance) in November 2018, had also held the additional charge of CMD since March 2023. He serves as the Chairman of NMDC Steel Limited and Legacy Iron Ore Limited. A Cost Accountant by profession, Mukherjee is a senior officer from the 1996 batch of the Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS) and has held significant roles within the Government of India, contributing to the nation’s industrial and economic development.
Under his leadership, NMDC has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first iron ore mining company in India to exceed a 45 million-tonne output in FY24. His tenure has been marked by the company’s highest-ever turnover and net worth, the adoption of advanced digital and technological infrastructure, and the resumption of operations at India’s only mechanized diamond mine. Mukherjee has also played a key role in commissioning the NMDC Steel Plant, a symbol of pride for Bastar.
In addition to his accomplishments in India, Mukherjee has led NMDC’s expansion into gold mining in Australia and laid the groundwork for the company’s international growth strategy, positioning it to become a global mining powerhouse. His strategic leadership has strengthened financial discipline, driven investment strategies, and positioned NMDC for a future focused on responsible mining. With Mukherjee at the helm, the Navratna company is now setting its sights on achieving an ambitious mining capacity of 100 million tonnes by 2030.
