BEML and GSL Collaborate to Revolutionize India’s Shipbuilding and Maritime Technologies

February 11, 2025 | Bengaluru, India – BEML Ltd., a leading Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) to collaborate on maritime projects and composites, reinforcing India’s maritime capabilities. The MoU was exchanged between Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director, BEML Ltd., and Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Chairman & Managing Director, GSL, in the presence of senior officials from both organizations. This strategic collaboration highlights BEML’s commitment to strengthening research and manufacturing capabilities in the defence and maritime domains. By leveraging BEML’s proven engineering expertise and GSL’s extensive experience in shipbuilding, this partnership aims to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the marine sector and contribute to India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, driving technological self-reliance in critical defence technologies.Welcoming the partnership, Shantanu Roy, CMD, BEML Ltd., stated, “We are delighted to join hands with GSL to advance the nation’s maritime sector through enhanced research and infrastructure capabilities. By combining our strengths, we are poised to deliver innovative and high-quality solutions. This collaboration underscores our commitment to reducing dependency on imports while strengthening our manufacturing capabilities to support India’s self-reliance in the defence and maritime domains.” The partnership will focus on the manufacturing of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite parts and assemblies for defence and commercial applications, along with the production of equipment for cutter section dredgers, trailer suction hopper dredgers, and other specialized marine equipment. Additionally, BEML will utilize GSL’s ship lift facility and dry dock for the repair and overhaul of yard crafts, tugs, and vessels of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and merchant shipping fleets. Through this MoU, BEML will bring its extensive technical expertise to the design and manufacturing of strategic equipment tailored for marine applications. This collaboration marks a significant step in India’s journey towards enhancing its maritime defence capabilities with indigenous solutions.
