Bhupendra Gupta: Powering India’s Energy Future with Vision and Leadership

(THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM) Bhupendra Gupta has taken charge as Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company and a Navratna enterprise under the Government of India. He assumed office on September 4, 2025, at the Corporate Office in Faridabad. Alongside this responsibility, he continues to hold the additional charge of CMD, SJVN Limited.

An electrical engineer with an MBA in Operations Management, Gupta’s journey is a remarkable blend of technical expertise, strategic vision, and leadership in some of India’s most challenging and prestigious power projects. He began his professional career with ACC Ltd in 1991 and entered the Central Public Sector Undertaking ecosystem in 1995 with SJVN. Over the next 12 years, he played a pivotal role in the planning, commissioning, and operation of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant, India’s largest hydroelectric project. His international exposure includes a successful deputation in Bhutan, where he contributed significantly to the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Project.

In 2007, Gupta joined REC Ltd., where he was instrumental in financing hydro and thermal projects. His leadership as Additional CEO in its subsidiaries helped execute several flagship power sector schemes of the Government of India, including Saubhagya, DDUGJY, and PMDP, ensuring electrification and energy access across the country.

His tenure at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan further strengthened his reputation as a problem-solver, where he resolved complex contractual and construction challenges. Later, as Director (Technical) at THDC India Ltd., Gupta steered projects through critical phases, including the commissioning of Unit-1 of the 660 MW Khurja STPP and Units 1 & 2 of Tehri PSP, overcoming technological and operational hurdles with strategic foresight.

With over three decades of experience in the power sector, including 31 years in CPSUs, Gupta’s contributions span hydropower, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution. His career is a testimony to excellence in project execution, contract management, operations, and the integration of advanced technologies in India’s power infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Gupta envisions NHPC playing a central role in India’s transition to non-fossil fuel energy sources. His focus on sustainability includes the adoption of AI, digital protection, energy storage, EV grid integration, green hydrogen, and bioenergy. This vision aligns with the national goal of energy self-reliance and positions NHPC as a leader in sustainable power solutions.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gupta is also known for his passion for sports. A keen badminton and table tennis player, he has proudly represented his organizations in inter-CPSU tournaments, reflecting his belief in discipline, teamwork, and perseverance both on and off the field.

As he steps into his new role at NHPC, Bhupendra Gupta brings with him not just decades of experience, but a forward-looking vision to transform India’s energy sector. His leadership is expected to drive NHPC’s next phase of growth, ensuring clean, reliable, and sustainable power for the nation.
