Dr. Ilayaraja T, Secretary, Tourism, and Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, is bringing renewed focus to the state’s rich tourism potential by promoting experiences that combine nature, heritage, culture and community hospitality. His vision places Madhya Pradesh firmly on the global tourism map as the “Heart of Incredible India”.

Addressing the National Tourism Organisation Talk Session at ITB Asia, the international travel trade show in Singapore, Dr. Ilayaraja encouraged travellers to explore the state’s “authentic, rustic and raw experiences”. His approach recognises that modern tourists increasingly seek meaningful journeys beyond crowded destinations, connecting with local traditions, rural life and distinctive landscapes.

Madhya Pradesh offers an exceptional tourism portfolio. With more than 25 per cent of its geographical area under forest cover, the state is home to tiger reserves and diverse wildlife, including leopards, cheetahs, vultures and gharials. Pench National Park, associated with the enduring appeal of Mowgli and *The Jungle Book*, and river rafting on the Betwa at Orchha add to its attractions.

The state’s cultural wealth is equally impressive, encompassing the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Sanchi, Khajuraho and Bhimbetka, alongside celebrated Gond paintings, Chanderi and Maheshwari textiles, and Bhopal’s Zari-Zardozi embroidery.

Dr. Ilayaraja’s tourism vision also embraces accessibility and inclusion. The expansion of helicopter tourism aims to improve access to offbeat destinations, while initiatives involving women safari drivers and women-managed hotels highlight opportunities for greater participation in the tourism economy. Collaboration with the Spanish Film Commission is expected to strengthen international film tourism prospects.

His emphasis on regional cuisine—from Malwa’s poha-jalebi to dal-bafla, Ratlami sev and Gwalior-Morena gajak—further reinforces the state’s distinctive identity.

Through this integrated approach, Dr. Ilayaraja is highlighting tourism as a platform for cultural preservation, local livelihoods and inclusive growth, inviting international visitors to discover Madhya Pradesh beyond conventional sightseeing.
