New Delhi, May 26, 2025 — The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved a one-year extension in service for Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR\&D) and Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Dr. Kamat will now continue in his dual role until May 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The extension has been granted under the provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d), which allows for continuation of service beyond the usual retirement age in public interest.

A distinguished scientist and technologist, Dr. Kamat has played a pivotal role in advancing India’s indigenous defence capabilities. His leadership at DRDO has seen significant progress in strategic defence technologies and the strengthening of India’s self-reliance in defence production.

This extension reflects the government’s confidence in Dr. Kamat’s vision and ongoing contributions to national defence research and development.
