The Ministry of Finance has officially invited applications for the position of Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), as the tenure of the current Chairperson, Madhabi Puri Buch, is set to conclude on February 28, 2025. Interested candidates are required to submit their applications by February 17, 2025.

The announcement, made by the Department of Economic Affairs (Financial Markets Division), specifies that the appointment will be for a maximum of five years or until the appointee turns 65, whichever comes first. The new Chairperson will be based in Mumbai and can opt for either a salary equivalent to that of a Secretary to the Government of India or a consolidated monthly salary of Rs 5,62,500, excluding housing and transport allowances.

Madhabi Puri Buch, who has held the position since March 2, 2022, previously served as a whole-time member of SEBI for five years, from April 2017 to March 2022.

This development comes as the government looks to appoint a new leader for SEBI, a key institution responsible for regulating India’s financial markets.
