New Delhi, September 2, 2025 — In an exceptional demonstration of integrity in public service, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apprehended two private individuals while they were offering and paying a bribe of ₹22 lakh to a Superintendent in the Directorate General of GST Intelligence.

According to the CBI, the officer was probing suspected tax evasion by several online firms when he was approached by the accused, who sought favorable treatment in return for illicit payment. Instead of succumbing, the Superintendent promptly reported the matter to the CBI, triggering a rare reverse trap operation.

The operation was meticulously planned to catch the perpetrators red-handed. The accused were arrested as they attempted to hand over the bribe, confirming the officer’s complaint. Subsequent searches at multiple premises linked to the accused are underway and are expected to reveal further evidence of the bribery conspiracy and tax evasion activities.

Officials described the action as a significant success against corrupt practices, crediting the GST officer’s uprightness and prompt reporting. “Such acts of sincerity and commitment to duty are vital in strengthening the fight against corruption,” a CBI spokesperson said.

The case underscores the critical role of honest public servants in safeguarding institutional integrity and sets a noteworthy precedent in India’s anti-corruption efforts.
