Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh, marking another significant milestone in his distinguished public life. His election follows the vacancy created by the resignation of former Union Minister L. Murugan.

Although the biennial byelection was scheduled for November 12, 2026, Puri’s election was declared on November 5 after the nomination papers of two independent candidates, including one backed by the Congress, were rejected. With no contest remaining, his election was formally declared unopposed.

His election certificate was received at the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly by BJP State President Hemant Khandelwal and Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda.

Puri’s elevation to the Upper House reflects his continued role in national policymaking and parliamentary affairs. A former diplomat with extensive international experience, he has brought a valuable blend of diplomatic understanding, administrative insight and policy perspective to public service.

As Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, he has been associated with India’s evolving energy priorities, including energy security, diversification of energy sources and strengthening the country’s energy ecosystem.

His entry into the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh further reinforces the state’s representation in national policymaking. His experience and engagement with key national and international issues are expected to add valuable perspectives to parliamentary deliberations.
