IAS, IPS Vacancies Persist Despite Steady Recruitment Efforts

By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM| A significant gap between sanctioned strength and actual postings in India’s premier civil services has once again come into focus, as the government informed the Lok Sabha that 1,300 posts in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and 505 in the Indian Police Service (IPS) remain vacant.

According to Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh, the IAS currently has 5,577 officers in position against a sanctioned strength of 6,877. Similarly, the IPS has 4,594 officers serving against an approved cadre of 5,099.

The data highlights a persistent shortfall in two of the country’s most critical administrative and law enforcement services. These vacancies can impact governance delivery, policy implementation, and policing efficiency, especially in states already facing manpower constraints.

Addressing the issue, the minister clarified that recruitment to the Indian Administrative Service is conducted in line with reservation policies. Since 2012, 180 candidates have been inducted annually through the Union Public Service Commission-conducted Civil Services Examination, with 4 percent reservation earmarked for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).

He further noted that the recruitment and allocation process remains continuous, ensuring a steady inflow of officers into both Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service. However, factors such as retirements, cadre expansion, and administrative requirements continue to influence vacancy levels.

The figures underscore the need for sustained and possibly enhanced recruitment strategies, along with efficient cadre management, to bridge the gap and strengthen administrative capacity across the country.
