Manoj Kumar Das takes charge as new Chief Secretary of Gujarat

Gujarat has got a new administrative head with the appointment of Manoj Kumar Das, IAS, as the Chief Secretary. Known for his visionary leadership, administrative acumen, and reform-oriented approach, Das brings with him over three decades of distinguished service in governance and public policy implementation.
An alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, where he earned his degree in Computer Science Engineering, Das has combined technological insight with governance excellence throughout his career. A 1986 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, he began his administrative journey as the District Development Officer of Vadodara, leaving an indelible mark through innovative initiatives and people-centric governance. Over the years, he has held several key positions across the state and at the Centre, earning a reputation as an officer who leads with both intellect and integrity.
Before his elevation as Chief Secretary, he served as Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister and also handled additional responsibilities as Additional Chief Secretary, Ports & Transport Department. His wide-ranging experience includes distinguished tenures as Director and Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, Municipal Commissioner of Vadodara and Surat, Joint Managing Director of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited (GSPC), and Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries and Mines Department.
Under his stewardship, the Industries and Mines Department witnessed a new era of industrial expansion. Das played a pivotal role in promoting ease of doing business and spearheaded the formulation and execution of the Gujarat Industrial Policy 2020, which was translated into eight foreign languages to attract global investors. He was also instrumental in the meticulous planning and successful execution of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2019, which emerged as one of the world’s most influential platforms for economic collaboration and global networking.
Manoj Kumar Das’s work has been widely recognized and honored. He has received eight national awards for his exemplary contributions as Municipal Commissioner of Vadodara and Surat and was felicitated by the Governor of Gujarat for his outstanding efforts in rural development. His visionary approach, deep understanding of governance systems, and commitment to inclusive growth have consistently earned him respect among peers and the public alike.
As Chief Secretary, Das is expected to further advance Gujarat’s legacy of good governance, innovation, and development. His appointment is seen as a continuation of Gujarat’s focus on administrative excellence, industrial leadership, and citizen-centric policymaking — a fitting choice for steering the state toward its next phase of progress and prosperity.
