By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM|Odisha has emerged as an important platform for advancing India’s commitment to eliminate sanitation-related deaths, with Bhubaneswar hosting a national workshop on “Mission Zero: Eliminating Deaths in Sanitation Work.” The workshop, held at the State Convention Centre, Lok Seva Bhavan, focused on strengthening institutional mechanisms, promoting appropriate technologies and ensuring operational readiness for safer sanitation services across Indian cities.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi attended the workshop, which brought together senior policymakers, urban administrators, sanitation experts, technology providers, manufacturers, civil society organisations and sanitation workers.

Among the key participants were Sudhansh Pant, Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India; Anu Garg, Chief Secretary, Odisha; and senior officials.

At the heart of the deliberations was a simple but transformative objective: no sanitation worker should lose life while performing essential public services. Achieving this vision requires more than policy commitments. It demands stronger institutional systems, suitable mechanised technologies, trained personnel, emergency preparedness and reliable operational protocols.

The emphasis on mechanisation is particularly significant. Hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks exposes sanitation workers to serious risks. Expanding machine-based cleaning services can reduce human exposure to dangerous environments while improving efficiency and dignity at work.

The national workshop provided an opportunity for cities and stakeholders to share experiences, examine technological solutions and identify practical pathways for scaling mechanised sanitation. It also reinforced the importance of convergence among government agencies, urban local bodies, technology providers and communities.

Mission Zero represents a larger governance commitment — transforming sanitation from a hazardous occupation into a safe, dignified and technology-driven public service. Odisha’s initiative in bringing diverse stakeholders together reflects the growing national resolve to ensure that cleanliness never comes at the cost of human life.
