Revenue Heritage Wall unveiled; book on taxation journey from Vedic period to modern era released; innovative ‘Tax Quid’ game launched

The National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), Regional Campus, Bhopal, hosted the grand finale of ‘Kaun Banega Karpati (KBK) Season-2’, bringing together knowledge, healthy competition, institutional heritage and innovation in a unique departmental programme.

The Tier-2 and Grand Finale of the competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from officers and employees of the Income Tax Department from the Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Nagpur regions. The initiative was designed to encourage awareness and understanding of taxation, particularly the provisions of the new Income Tax Act, 2025, through an engaging and competitive format.

As many as 550 officers and employees had registered for KBK Season-2. Participants were divided into two categories—Category 1 comprising employees up to the level of Inspector, and Category 2 comprising Income Tax Officers (ITOs) and officers above that level.

Following the Tier-1 examination, 30 participants from each category, making a total of 60, qualified for Tier-2. After the second stage, five participants from each category advanced to the Grand Finale.

The Tier-2 and Grand Finale rounds featured challenging questions covering various aspects of taxation, including the new Income Tax Act, 2025. The competition tested participants’ knowledge, quick decision-making and ability to respond under pressure, while creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and healthy competition.

Celebrating Excellence in the Grand Finale

In Category 1, comprising employees up to the level of Inspector, Dushyant Kumar Gupta, Income Tax Inspector, emerged as the winner.

The runners-up were Deepak Kumar, Income Tax Inspector, Jabalpur; Himanshu Singh, Income Tax Inspector, Bhopal; Deepak Gaur, Income Tax Inspector, Indore; and Saurabh Awasthi, Income Tax Inspector, Jabalpur.

In Category 2, comprising ITOs and officers above that level, Krishna Kumar Chaudhary, Income Tax Officer, Bilaspur, emerged as the winner.

The runners-up were Sanjay Agrawal, Income Tax Officer, Bhopal; Ashish Modgil, Income Tax Officer, Bhopal; Om Prakash, Income Tax Officer, Bhopal; and Mochan Meher, Income Tax Officer, Raipur.

The competition provided a platform for strengthening knowledge, team spirit, quick decision-making and a culture of continuous learning among departmental personnel.

Revenue Heritage Wall Traces the Evolution of Income Tax in India

One of the key highlights of the programme was the unveiling of the ‘Revenue Heritage Wall’, showcasing the historical evolution of the income tax system in India.

The wall presents the development of various Income Tax Acts, including those of 1860, 1886, 1914, 1922 and 1961, in an integrated and visually engaging format. The initiative seeks to preserve and showcase the legal, administrative and institutional heritage of the Income Tax Department while helping present and future generations understand the evolution of India’s taxation system.

The Heritage Wall thus serves as a bridge between the historical foundations of taxation and the contemporary tax administration framework.

From the Vedic Era to Modern Taxation

Another significant highlight was the release of the book Taxation Journey Through Vedic Period to Modern Era, authored by Santosh Kumar Nigam, Income Tax Officer, Bhopal, under the guidance of Rajkumar Ghosh, Additional Director General, NADT, Regional Campus, Bhopal.

The book traces the concept and evolution of taxation in India from the Vedic period to the modern era. It brings together perspectives on ancient Indian taxation philosophy, taxation practices across different historical periods and the evolution of the modern income tax system.

The book also highlights the philosophy of balanced and sensitive taxation reflected in ancient Indian thought. One of the verses cited in the book describes the principle that taxation should be undertaken without causing undue hardship to the people—drawing an analogy with a bee collecting honey from flowers and a cow being milked while caring for its calf.

The idea reflects an enduring emphasis on balance, sensitivity and public welfare in the philosophy of taxation.

‘Tax Quid’ Brings Tax Learning into a Team-Based Format

Adding an element of innovation to the programme, NADT Regional Campus, Bhopal, also launched ‘Tax Quid’, a knowledge-oriented, team-based game designed around taxation.

The initiative aims to take tax-related learning beyond conventional classroom methods by combining knowledge with participation, teamwork and healthy competition. It is intended to help officers and employees engage with the provisions of the new Income Tax Act, 2025, in a simpler, interactive and participatory manner.

The launch of ‘Tax Quid’ reflects an emerging emphasis on innovative approaches to professional learning, where knowledge acquisition can be supported through collaborative and engaging formats.

A Confluence of Knowledge, Heritage and Innovation

Rajkumar Ghosh, Additional Director General, NADT, Regional Campus, Bhopal, welcomed the guests and shared details of initiatives and decisions undertaken by the Training Directorate. He also explained the concept and objectives of the newly launched ‘Tax Quid’ game.

The programme was attended by Mona Mohanti, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, as the Chief Guest, and Bijoy Kumar Panda, Director General of Income Tax, as the Special Guest.

The KBK Grand Finale was conducted by quiz masters Sagar Shrivastava, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, and Santosh Kumar Nigam, Income Tax Officer, Bhopal. They presented participants with a series of engaging and challenging questions across different rounds.

At the beginning of the programme, Swati Agrawal, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, briefed the gathering about various initiatives undertaken by the NADT Regional Campus, Bhopal. She highlighted the Revenue Heritage Wall, the release of the book *Taxation Journey Through Vedic Period to Modern Era*, and the KBK competition aimed at enhancing awareness and knowledge of new tax laws among officers and employees.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Arpit Bohra, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax. The proceedings were anchored by Divya Mishra, Office Superintendent.

Officers and employees of the Income Tax Department attended the programme and witnessed the culmination of KBK Season-2 as well as the launch of the various knowledge and heritage initiatives.

Taken together, the initiatives at NADT Regional Campus, Bhopal, brought competition, learning, history and innovation onto a common platform. KBK Season-2 created an interactive environment for strengthening taxation-related knowledge and quick decision-making, while the Revenue Heritage Wall highlighted the institutional journey of India’s income tax system. The book connected the historical philosophy of taxation with the modern era, and ‘Tax Quid’ introduced a participatory approach to learning.

The programme aptly reflected the spirit of “Heritage to Knowledge, Knowledge to Innovation, and Innovation to Excellence”, creating a distinctive platform for continuous learning and professional engagement within the Income Tax Department.
