NHPC Achieves Breakthrough at Subansiri Lower HEP

BY THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM|In a defining leap for India’s hydropower journey, NHPC achieved a historic milestone on 02.12.2025 with the successful synchronization of the 250 MW Unit (Unit#2) of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower HEP (out of 8 Units of 250 MW each) with the National Grid at 18:12 Hrs. This achievement marks a renewed surge in India’s clean energy capabilities and reinforces Subansiri’s status as the nation’s most anticipated hydropower project.
Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC virtually presided over the moment, adding to its importance. Joining him remotely in this landmark event were Mohammad Afzal, Government Nominee Director; Uttam Lal, Director (Personnel); Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects); Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical); Mahesh Kumar Sharma, Director (Finance) Premkumar Goverthanan, Independent Director; Shri Uday Sakharam Nirgudkar, Independent Director; Jiji Joseph, Independent Director; Anil Kumar Sood, Independent Director and Santosh Kumar, CVO. Senior leadership from the Corporate Office and the Project, including Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director & Head of Subansiri Lower Project and I.P. Ranjan, Executive Director (O&M) were also present to witness the milestone.
On the occasion, Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC expressed profound gratitude to the Ministry of Power, Government of India, the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, previous NHPC leaderships, the Subansiri project fraternity, executing agencies and all stakeholders whose support and perseverance have shaped this accomplishment. He stated that the successful synchronization of Unit#2 is a testament to NHPC’s technological mastery and reaffirms India’s determined stride toward a cleaner, greener and energy-secure future, while strengthening the resilience of the National Grid. He lauded the relentless commitment of the Subansiri team and highlighted that this achievement marks a crucial stepping stone toward the phased commissioning of the remaining Units.
Upon full commissioning, the Subansiri Lower HEP (8×250 MW) will emerge as India’s largest hydropower generating station, illuminating millions of lives and bolstering the nation’s sustainable development vision.
Echoing the sentiment,Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director & Head of Project, extended heartfelt appreciation to the NHPC Management, Corporate Teams and every individual and agency involved – M/s GE Vernova, M/s BGS-SGS-SOMA, M/s TREL, M/s PEL and the local communities whose solidarity and perseverance have driven the project forward. He applauded the team’s resilience and urged them to carry forward the same passion and discipline as the project advances toward completion and commissioning of the remaining Units.
