By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM| NMDC, the country’s largest iron ore miner, is witnessing a strong growth trajectory in the current financial year, with robust production performance across its major mining complexes and the potential to cross 60 million tonnes (MT) of production in FY27.
In August 2026, NMDC produced 4.07 MT of iron ore, registering a 21% increase over the corresponding period last year. Sales also grew by 5% to 3.58 MT, reflecting healthy demand and steady market performance.
A major highlight of the month was the record performance of NMDC’s mining projects at Kirandul, Bacheli and Donimalai. All three projects recorded their highest-ever production for any August since inception, demonstrating improved operational efficiency and strong asset utilisation.
The company’s cumulative performance during April-August FY27 has been particularly impressive. NMDC produced 23.23 MT of iron ore during the five-month period, compared with 18.45 MT in the corresponding period last year. This translates into a substantial 26% growth in production.
Sales during April-August stood at 18.72 MT, compared with 18.37 MT during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering a 2% increase. While the pace of production growth has significantly outstripped sales growth, the figures indicate that NMDC continues to maintain a strong sales base alongside rising output.
The latest performance builds on the company’s achievement in FY26, when NMDC produced more than 53 MT of iron ore. With production already reaching 23.23 MT in the first five months of FY27, the current trajectory suggests that the company could surpass the 60 MT production mark during the year.
Crossing 60 MT would mark another important milestone for NMDC and further consolidate its position as India’s leading iron ore producer. The increase in production is also strategically important for the country’s steel sector, as higher domestic iron ore availability can support expanding steel-making capacity and reduce dependence on external sources.
The strong performance at Kirandul, Bacheli and Donimalai highlights the importance of NMDC’s established mining assets in driving future growth. Achieving record August production at these projects indicates that the company is extracting greater value and efficiency from its existing operations.
The sustained rise in production also reflects NMDC’s broader focus on strengthening operational capabilities and increasing output to meet the growing requirements of India’s steel industry.
With production growing 26% during April-August and monthly output continuing to remain strong, NMDC has made an encouraging start to FY27. If the momentum is sustained through the remaining months, crossing 60 MT could become a defining achievement for the company this fiscal.
For NMDC, the numbers underline a clear growth story: from producing over 53 MT in FY26 to potentially exceeding 60 MT in FY27, the country’s largest iron ore miner is steadily moving towards a new production benchmark.
