By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM|The agreement aims to strengthen India-UK capital market connectivity through dual listings, cross-border trading, innovative financial products and expanded investment opportunities.

NSE IFSC Limited (NSEIX) and London Stock Exchange plc (LSE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore strategic collaboration aimed at strengthening cross-border capital market connectivity and creating new listing and trading opportunities for issuers and investors in India and the United Kingdom.

The agreement establishes a broad framework for cooperation across several areas, including dual and cross-listings of equity, fixed-income securities and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), trading of existing financial products, and the development of innovative financial instruments.

The proposed collaboration will also explore the introduction of derivatives on NSEIX using FTSE Russell indices as underlying benchmarks, alongside the joint development of new equity indices, cross-border trading connectivity and market data distribution.

Strengthening India-UK Financial Market Ties

The MoU comes amid efforts to deepen economic and financial cooperation between India and the UK, with the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) providing a broader context for exploring greater integration between the two countries’ capital markets and financial services sectors.

Through the proposed partnership, NSEIX and LSE aim to leverage their respective market strengths to facilitate access to a wider investor base, improve market liquidity and expand opportunities for companies seeking access to international capital.

The exchanges will explore mechanisms for dual and cross-listings across multiple asset classes, as well as potential cross-border connectivity that could support more seamless, bidirectional trading opportunities between the two markets.

NSEIX Sees Opportunity to Deepen Market Connectivity

V. Balasubramaniam, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NSEIX, welcomed the agreement, describing it as an important step towards closer collaboration between the financial markets of India and the UK.

He said the initiative builds on the opportunities emerging from the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, particularly in capital market connectivity and financial services integration.

According to Balasubramaniam, the two exchanges will initially explore collaboration in dual and cross-listings across products, alongside the possibility of establishing cross-border connectivity to enable more seamless trading in both directions.

He added that such cooperation could help increase liquidity and broaden the pool of investors participating in the respective markets.

Balasubramaniam also highlighted the complementary strengths of the two institutions, noting NSEIX’s position within the GIFT International Financial Services Centre (GIFT IFSC) ecosystem and the London Stock Exchange’s established presence in the UK financial market.

He said the agreement represents a timely opportunity to deepen financial market connections between the two countries.

London Stock Exchange Looks to Expand Global Partnerships

Dame Julia Hoggett, Chief Executive Officer of London Stock Exchange plc and Head of Digital & Securities Markets at London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), said the exchange has a strong track record of building collaborative partnerships with exchanges worldwide.

She welcomed the opportunity to strengthen the relationship with NSEIX and explore new avenues for growth.

Hoggett said the MoU marks another step in the exchanges’ efforts to connect two major capital markets and generate tangible benefits for companies and investors.

The proposed partnership is expected to provide a framework for examining opportunities that could support international capital raising, broaden investment choices and encourage the development of new financial products.

Focus on Listings, Derivatives and Trading Infrastructure

Beyond conventional listing opportunities, the agreement identifies several areas for further exploration.

These include developing derivatives on NSEIX based on FTSE Russell indices, jointly creating new equity indices, and examining opportunities to improve cross-border trading connectivity and market data distribution.

If implemented following further discussions and any necessary regulatory approvals, such initiatives could help expand the range of instruments available to market participants and strengthen links between the Indian and UK financial ecosystems.

However, the MoU establishes a framework to explore potential areas of cooperation rather than confirming the immediate launch of specific products or trading arrangements.

A Step Towards Greater International Capital Market Integration

The agreement between NSEIX and the London Stock Exchange reflects a shared interest in exploring new channels for international investment and capital formation.

By combining NSEIX’s role in the GIFT IFSC ecosystem with the London Stock Exchange’s international reach, the two institutions aim to identify opportunities that could benefit issuers seeking capital, investors seeking diversification and market participants looking for broader access to financial products.

As discussions progress, the focus will be on assessing the feasibility of the proposed initiatives and identifying practical avenues for collaboration.

The MoU marks an initial step towards closer cooperation between the two exchanges, with the potential to support stronger India-UK financial market links and create new opportunities for cross-border investment and trading.
