By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM| New Delhi, August 7: In a significant step towards deepening regional energy cooperation and advancing the clean energy agenda, NTPC Limited Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh met Anura Karunathilake, Minister of Energy of the Government of Sri Lanka, in New Delhi to review the progress of the strategically important Sampur Solar Project and explore new avenues of collaboration in renewable energy.

The high-level meeting reflected the shared commitment of India and Sri Lanka to accelerate the transition towards sustainable and low-carbon energy systems. Discussions centred on expediting the implementation of the Sampur Solar Project, which is expected to play a vital role in strengthening Sri Lanka’s renewable energy capacity while reinforcing bilateral cooperation in the power sector.

Beyond the Sampur project, both sides explored opportunities for expanding collaboration across emerging clean energy domains, including solar and wind power, green hydrogen, and advanced energy storage solutions. These sectors are increasingly viewed as key pillars of future energy security, economic growth, and climate resilience.

NTPC, India’s largest integrated power utility, has been actively diversifying its energy portfolio with an ambitious focus on renewable energy and green technologies. The company is driving large-scale investments in solar, wind, pumped hydro, battery energy storage systems, and green hydrogen, in line with India’s vision of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.

The discussions also underscored the growing importance of regional partnerships in ensuring energy security and supporting the global transition to cleaner sources of power. Collaboration between India and Sri Lanka in renewable energy is expected to facilitate technology exchange, investment, capacity building, and sustainable infrastructure development.

The Sampur Solar Project represents a milestone in the evolving energy partnership between the two neighbouring nations. Once operational, the project is expected to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s renewable energy targets while showcasing the strength of India-Sri Lanka cooperation in sustainable development.

As South Asia moves towards a greener energy future, initiatives such as the Sampur Solar Project and broader cooperation in solar, wind, green hydrogen, and energy storage reaffirm the commitment of both countries to building a resilient, environmentally responsible, and interconnected regional energy ecosystem.
