Central Government has approved a one-year extension in service for current Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood, just days ahead of his scheduled retirement on May 24, 2026.

The extension was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on the recommendations of the high-level selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel.

Sood, who took over as CBI Director in May 2023 after serving as Karnataka Director General of Police, had earlier also received a one-year extension in May 2025. With the latest decision, he will continue to head the country’s premier investigative agency for another year.
