R. Venkataramani Reappointed Attorney General of India for Two Years

Senior advocate R. Venkataramani has been reappointed Attorney General of India for a fresh two-year term, effective October 1, 2025. The Law Ministry notification issued on Friday confirmed that his current tenure, set to end on September 30, has been extended by the President’s approval.

Venkataramani, 75, succeeded jurist K.K. Venugopal as the country’s top law officer in 2022. A constitutional authority, the Attorney General advises the Union government on intricate legal matters and represents it in courts across India.

Practising in the Supreme Court since 1979, Venkataramani has built a distinguished career spanning constitutional law, taxation, civil and criminal law, human rights and service matters. Designated senior advocate in 1997, he has represented the Centre, states, universities and public sector undertakings in major litigations.

A member of the Law Commission in 2010, he enrolled with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in 1977 after starting his practice in Puducherry.
