The Madhya Pradesh Government’s decision to entrust senior IAS officer Ashok Barnwal (1991 batch) with the additional charge of Chief Secretary marks the beginning of another important chapter in the state’s administrative leadership.

According to an order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on July 22, 2026, Barnwal has been appointed as the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh on an interim basis with immediate effect. While continuing as Additional Chief Secretary, Public Health and Medical Education Department, he will also discharge the responsibilities of the state’s top bureaucrat until further orders. He will additionally continue to oversee the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department as Additional Chief Secretary and hold the additional charge of Commissioner, Food Safety, Madhya Pradesh.

The appointment places one of the state’s most experienced administrators at the apex of the bureaucracy at a time when governance is increasingly driven by efficiency, technology, public service delivery and inter-departmental coordination.

A Career Built on Administrative Excellence

Originally hailing from Jharkhand, Ashok Barnwal was born on January 27, 1969. A 1991-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, he joined the Indian Administrative Service on September 15, 1991, embarking on a career that has spanned more than three decades of public service.

What distinguishes Barnwal is his rare combination of technical expertise and administrative competence. An engineering graduate with a B.Tech. in Mining Engineering, he further strengthened his academic credentials with postgraduate qualifications in Public Administration, Political Science, Commerce and Management. Such a multidisciplinary educational background has enabled him to approach governance with analytical precision while maintaining a strong understanding of public policy and institutional management.

From District Administration to Policy Leadership

Like many accomplished civil servants, Barnwal’s administrative journey began at the grassroots. He has served as District Collector in Guna, Shahdol and Dewas—districts with diverse developmental challenges and administrative priorities. These assignments provided him with extensive field experience in public administration, rural development, infrastructure management and citizen-centric governance.

His tenure in district administration earned him the reputation of an officer capable of balancing developmental priorities with administrative discipline. As he progressed through the bureaucracy, Barnwal assumed increasingly significant responsibilities at the state level, contributing to policy formulation and implementation across multiple sectors.

His present portfolio reflects the confidence reposed in him by the government. Public Health and Medical Education remain among the most critical departments in the post-pandemic governance landscape, while the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department continues to oversee one of India’s most sensitive humanitarian responsibilities. Simultaneously supervising Food Safety further underscores the breadth of his administrative mandate.

The office of the Chief Secretary is the highest bureaucratic position in any state.
