In a significant diplomatic gesture, China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, has voiced firm opposition to the United States’ decision to impose tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods. Expressing solidarity, he declared, “Silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India.”

This statement, coming at a time of shifting global trade dynamics, holds deeper implications. Traditionally, India and China have found themselves on opposing sides of several strategic and economic issues. Yet, Xu Feihong’s remark suggests a pragmatic shift—one that seeks cooperation over confrontation, particularly in the face of protectionist measures by developed economies.

Both India and China represent two of the world’s fastest-growing economies and together account for nearly one-third of humanity. Their trade relationship, despite political complexities, has witnessed steady growth. In fiscal 2024, India’s imports from China reached record highs, while sectors such as pharmaceuticals, IT, and green technology provide ample opportunities for collaboration.

China’s open backing on the tariff issue signals recognition of India’s importance in the evolving global economic order. It also provides a potential platform for both nations to reimagine their engagement—shifting from competition towards partnership in multilateral forums such as BRICS, SCO, and G20.

If followed by constructive dialogue and mutual trust-building, this episode could serve as a turning point in India-China relations. By aligning on issues of trade fairness and resisting unilateral economic coercion, New Delhi and Beijing have an opportunity to strengthen not just bilateral ties, but also the voice of the Global South in international trade governance.

The ambassador’s assurance is therefore more than rhetoric—it is an invitation for India and China to transform challenges into opportunities, standing together as two strong nations against economic bullying, while paving the way for a cooperative future.
