By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM|NHPC Limited marked a major milestone in India’s hydropower journey with the successful synchronisation of the second unit of 250 MW (Unit–3) of its flagship 8×250 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP). The unit was synchronised with the National Grid at 9:00 PM on January 21, 2026, reinforcing NHPC’s steady progress towards commissioning the country’s largest hydroelectric project.

The achievement reflects years of sustained engineering effort, coordination and perseverance at one of India’s most complex hydropower sites, located on the Subansiri River at the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border. With this synchronisation, NHPC has taken another decisive step towards enhancing grid stability and strengthening the nation’s clean energy capacity.

On the occasion, Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, NHPC, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for their continued support. He also acknowledged the guidance of former NHPC leadership, whose vision and groundwork have played a crucial role in advancing the project. Commending the Subansiri project team led by Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director and Head of Project, Gupta noted that the successful synchronisation demonstrates NHPC’s strong technical capabilities and commitment to timely execution. He added that the milestone will facilitate the phased commissioning of the remaining units, bringing the project closer to full operationalisation.

Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director and Head of Project, extended his appreciation to NHPC Management and corporate teams, as well as the executing agencies—M/s GE Vernova, M/s BGS-SGS-SOMA, M/s TREL and M/s PEL—for their dedicated efforts. He also acknowledged the cooperation and support of local stakeholders, emphasising that collective commitment has been key to overcoming technical and logistical challenges. Encouraging the project team, he urged them to maintain steady momentum towards the commissioning of the balance units.

Upon completion, the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project will be the largest hydroelectric project in India. Beyond meeting growing national energy demands, the project will play a vital role in promoting renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable development in the North Eastern region. The synchronisation of Unit–3 stands as a testament to NHPC’s role in powering India’s clean and resilient energy future.
