Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director, THDCIL announced historic achievement towards successful commissioning of India’s first Variable Speed 1000 MW Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri with the successful synchronization of its First unit (250 MW) to the Indian Grid in Pump Condenser Mode. The Pump Condenser synchronization took place on 23rd April 2025, marking a significant leap in the development of India’s Renewable Energy infrastructure. During the synchronization, Unit behaviour was satisfactory and successfully consumed approx. 4 MW, 13.6Mvar for approx. 10 minutes. Vishnoi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Team PSP for this exceptional achievement, underscoring the critical role this milestone plays in enhancing the Indian Grid’s capacity and stability. He highlighted that this is a Novel Benchmark, bringing India’s largest Hydro Power Complex, the Tehri Hydro Power Complex closer to full operationalization with a total installed capacity of 2,400 MW. RK Vishnoi further added that this achievement is a testament to our commitment to strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure. It positions the Tehri Hydro Power Complex as a key contributor to the nation’s transition towards a sustainable and resilient energy future. The Tehri PSP will play a pivotal role in balancing the Northern Grid by converting surplus off-peak energy into peaking power ensuring a steady and reliable electricity supply to millions of consumers. With a total capacity of 1000 MW, this Plant is designed to deliver crucial peaking power support to the grid, particularly during times of high demand. Shallinder Singh, Director (Personnel), THDCIL conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to Team Tehri PSP for this exceptional achievement and added that this accomplishment marks a significant chapter in India’s renewable energy journey, reinforcing THDC India Limited’s pivotal role in advancing sustainable solutions and supporting India’s clean energy transition. Bhupender Gupta, Director (Technical), congratulated Team Tehri PSP for this outstanding achievement and praised the team’s dedication and innovative approach, which have set a new benchmark for Hydroelectric power projects in India. Gupta added that this successful synchronization is a significant leap forward, not just for THDC, but for the entire Renewable Energy Ecosystem of the country.
