In a significant leadership change, Tuhin Kanta Pandey has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He will succeed Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure concludes on February 28.

A 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, Pandey steps into the role at a crucial time for the financial markets. His appointment follows a selection process initiated by the Finance Ministry, which had invited applications for the position by February 17.

T. K. Pandey, last year in August turned 60. He has been given a three year term at Sebi. This marks another instance of a serving bureaucrat being appointed to a regulatory post before retirement.

Prior to the official announcement, The Newsman of India had reported on February 27, 2025, that the government was in the final stages of selecting the next SEBI Chairperson. The report highlighted several prominent candidates in contention, including Pankaj Jain, Ashwani Bhatia, KC Varshney, and Ajay Seth, with Pandey among the frontrunners.

Pandey had a distinguished career in various pivotal roles, including heading the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).

Buch’s predecessors, Ajay Tyagi and UK Sinha, had both received extensions during their tenure, with Tyagi serving for four years and Sinha for six. Pandey’s leadership will be closely watched as he takes the helm of India’s market regulator.
