India’s digital payments landscape is witnessing a rapid shift towards QR-based transactions, with merchant adoption accelerating across urban and rural markets, according to a report by Worldline.
The number of UPI-enabled QR codes reportedly rose 15 per cent in 2025, reaching 731.38 million, reflecting wider acceptance among small and large merchants alike. This expansion aligns with a sharp 33 per cent surge in transaction volumes on the Unified Payments Interface, which climbed to 228.5 billion from 172.2 billion in 2024.
While QR infrastructure scaled rapidly, point-of-sale terminals also registered steady growth, increasing 15 per cent to 11.48 million during the year.
The report further highlighted evolving consumer spending patterns, with the average UPI transaction size declining to ₹1,314 in 2025 from ₹1,437 a year earlier, indicating rising usage for smaller, everyday payments. In contrast, average ticket sizes for credit and debit cards remained significantly higher at ₹4,150 and ₹3,360 respectively, underlining their continued relevance for higher-value purchases.
