The Uttarakhand government has partnered with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to enhance tourism in the state’s border villages through the central government’s “Vibrant Village” programme. This initiative focuses on improving infrastructure, expanding heli-services, creating employment opportunities, and reversing migration trends in remote regions, with special emphasis on Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh districts.
Signed on January 1, 2025, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Uttarakhand government and ITBP aims to develop the state’s border villages by enhancing their accessibility and livability. The “Vibrant Village” programme seeks to address long-standing infrastructure gaps and improve the quality of life for residents, making these areas attractive to both locals and tourists.
A key feature of this collaboration is the expansion of heli-services to connect remote villages with major towns and cities. The ITBP will play a crucial role in identifying aerial routes for heli-tourism circuits, facilitating easier access to scenic spots and promoting the state’s immense tourism potential. With its mountainous landscapes and natural beauty, Uttarakhand is ideal for heli-tourism, and these aerial routes will make it easier for tourists to explore regions that were previously hard to reach.
In addition to enhancing tourism infrastructure, the initiative is expected to create local employment opportunities in hospitality, transportation, and other tourism-related sectors. This will help curb the migration of young people to urban areas, as better job prospects and improved living conditions encourage them to stay in their hometowns.
ITBP’s expertise in navigating the challenging terrain of Uttarakhand will be essential in maintaining safety and guiding the development of tourism infrastructure. The police force will also ensure security, allowing tourists to explore the region with confidence.
Through this collaboration, Uttarakhand aims to promote sustainable tourism, economic growth, and cultural preservation in its border villages. The “Vibrant Village” programme promises to transform these remote areas, offering new opportunities for both residents and visitors while preserving the state’s natural and cultural heritage.
