Vikas Kumar Vikas, an exceptional IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre (2004 batch), has recently been transferred and appointed as the Additional Commissioner of Police for Law & Order (West Zone) in Bangalore City. His illustrious career in law enforcement spans over two decades, with experience in various high-profile roles and responsibilities across a wide range of policing and administrative areas. He pursued his undergraduate degree in Geography from the University of Delhi and completed his post-graduation from the renowned Delhi School of Economics. there—Vikas qualified for the National Eligibility Test (NET) and earned a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) from the University Grants Commission (UGC), positioning him as a qualified lecturer in Geography.
Despite his academic success, Vikas’s true calling lay in public service. He appeared for the Civil Services Examination, where his remarkable abilities earned him a place in the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 2004, with a posting in the Karnataka cadre.
A Distinguished Career in Policing ;Vikas’s journey in the police service began with a rigorous and transformative training at Mussoorie and Hyderabad. His first posting as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Bhatkal, Karwar District, provided him with valuable early experiences in professional policing. This role exposed him to challenging situations, sharpening his problem-solving skills and shaping his future as a dedicated officer.
His career took a significant leap as he moved through a series of impactful assignments. Over the years, he has served in several key positions, including as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bangalore Rural, Haveri, and Chikmagalur Districts. His expertise expanded beyond district policing to more specialized fields such as Anti-Naxal Operations, Anti-Terror Operations, Counter-Intelligence, Intelligence, and Internal Security. As a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Bangalore, Vikas displayed exemplary leadership in maintaining law and order in one of the most dynamic urban environments in India.
Vikas’s rise continued as he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP). In this capacity, he served as the Commander for Anti-Naxal Operations and Director of Anti-Terror Operations, where he played a crucial role in safeguarding the state against extremism and terrorism. His leadership was instrumental in strategizing and executing successful counter-insurgency operations, earning him accolades for his professionalism and foresight.
Additionally, Vikas held significant administrative responsibilities, including his tenure as the Executive Director of the Police Housing Corporation. His work in improving police infrastructure and housing for officers was vital in boosting the morale of the police force.
Broader Administrative Experience Vikas Kumar Vikas’s tenure as the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Director of Youth Empowerment and Sports Department in Karnataka allowed him to bring his leadership skills to the social and developmental sectors.
Moreover, Vikas served as the Managing Director of MSIL (Mysore Sales International Limited) in the Commerce & Industry Department. During his tenure, MSIL achieved several milestones, including receiving prestigious awards such as the Golden Peacock Award and the SKOCH Award. His leadership in this position contributed to the organization’s recognition and growth, with Vikas personally being conferred with individual honors such as Global Indian of the Year and Pride of India. Recently, Vikas was appointed as the Inspector General of Police for the Northern Range, Belgaum, Karnataka, and now as the Additional Commissioner of Police, Law & Order (West Zone) in Bangalore City.
