PM Lays Foundation Stone for POWERGRID’s Transmission System

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Transmission System being built by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a ‘Maharatna’ CPSE under the Ministry of Power, Government of India for evacuation of power from Kudankulam Unit-3&4 (2×1000 MW) power plant in a function held at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu on 27th July 2025. The scheme being implemented by POWERGRID Kudankulam Transmission Limited under Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project includes construction of 400 kV D/C (quad) Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (3&4) – Tuticorin-II GIS PS Transmission Line & two 400 kV GIS Line Terminal equipments at Tuticorin-II GIS. R. N. Ravi, Governor, Tamil Nadu, Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Dr. L. Murugan, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Thangam Thenarasu, Minister of Agriculture, Tamil Nadu, Smt. P Geetha Jeevan, Hon’ble Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, Tamil Nadu, Smt. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, MP and senior officials from the central & state government and POWERGRID were present during the ceremony. The project will facilitate the evacuation of 2 GW of clean and sustainable nuclear power to beneficiary states and Union Territories, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry, to meet the growing energy demands of the region. This transmission infrastructure also supports India’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non–fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, making a significant contribution to the nation’s energy transition, security, and commitment to a greener future. As of 30th June 2025, POWERGRID has commissioned and is operating 284 Sub-stations and more than 1,80,533 ckm transmission lines and 5,66,831 MVA of transformation capacity. With the adoption of the latest technological tools and techniques, enhanced use of automation and digital solutions, POWERGRID has been able to maintain an average transmission system availability of more than 99.84%.
