UNFPA Representative Andrea M. Wojnar has lauded the Madhya Pradesh Police for embedding a gender-based response mechanism in the state’s recently enhanced Helpline 112, describing it as a vital step in strengthening public safety and building inclusive communities.

She was warmly welcomed by Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police Kailash Makwana, and the two held detailed discussions on advancing gender-responsive policing in the state. Their conversation focused on pathways to deepen collaboration, pioneering innovative approaches, and reinforcing progress towards inclusive development.

Wojnar emphasized that the integration of gender-sensitive protocols within emergency services not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also contributes to long-term progress in gender equality and community trust. She noted that such initiatives pave the way for safer environments where women and vulnerable groups feel supported and protected.

Highlighting UNFPA’s commitment to promoting gender-responsive governance, Wojnar underlined the importance of improving training for personnel, leveraging technology to enhance response times, and ensuring victim-centered support services.

The move is seen as part of Madhya Pradesh’s broader commitment to development and social inclusion. By integrating gender-sensitive responses within Helpline 112, the state aims to ensure that issues such as domestic violence, harassment, and gender-based crimes are addressed with urgency, empathy, and professionalism.

Observers believe this initiative will serve as a model for other states in India, reinforcing the importance of gender perspectives in law enforcement frameworks.
