New Delhi, September 5, 2025: India’s journey towards sustainable energy took a significant leap forward as Engineers India Limited (EIL) announced the successful mechanical completion of the Bio Refinery Project of Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) at Numaligarh, Assam.
This pioneering facility is designed to produce 49,000 tonnes per annum of bio-ethanol, 11,000 tonnes of acetic acid, and 19,000 tonnes of furfural using bamboo as the primary raw material. Executed by EIL in EPCM mode directly from the demonstration stage, the project is based on advanced technology supplied by Chempolis OY.
The Numaligarh biorefinery is not only a landmark achievement for EIL in its six-decade-long journey of building India’s energy infrastructure but also a benchmark for the nation’s bio-refinery initiatives. It will contribute to the government’s Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP), reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and provide a cleaner alternative for the transportation sector.
Beyond ethanol production, the facility opens avenues for value-added products and chemicals from by-products, creating opportunities for industrial diversification and rural economic growth. This achievement stands aligned with the government’s vision of energy security and Prime Minister’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.
The successful mechanical completion of India’s first bamboo-based biorefinery symbolizes a future where innovation and sustainability converge, positioning Assam at the forefront of the nation’s green energy transformation.
