By THE NEWSMAN OF INDIA.COM| In a notable stride toward strengthening India’s global academic and institutional infrastructure, NBCC (India) Limited has laid the foundation stone for a new campus of Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in New Delhi. The ceremony, held on May 5, 2026, marks the beginning of a landmark project envisioned to redefine higher education infrastructure in the capital.
With a sanctioned cost of nearly Rs 350 Crore, the ambitious project is being developed on a 7.55-acre site at Maidangarhi in South Delhi. Strategically located near Chhatarpur, the campus enjoys seamless connectivity to key parts of the city, including metro networks, arterial roads, and the Indira Gandhi International Airport, positioning it as a well-connected academic hub.
The foundation stone ceremony was presided over by K.P. Mahadevaswamy, Chairman & Managing Director of NBCC, who highlighted the project as a forward-looking investment in IIFT’s global aspirations. Emphasising the broader vision, he noted that the initiative goes beyond physical expansion, aiming to enhance the institution’s capacity to compete, collaborate, and innovate on the international stage. The event also witnessed the presence of Suman Kumar, Director (Commercial), along with senior dignitaries, stakeholders, and NBCC officials.
Envisioned as a modern, integrated campus, the development will feature a total built-up area of nearly 54,000 sq. m., carefully designed to complement and expand the existing capabilities of IIFT. The project is structured to create a holistic ecosystem that nurtures academic excellence, research innovation, and global engagement.
At the heart of the campus will be a state-of-the-art Academic Block equipped with smart classrooms, lecture halls of varying capacities, faculty offices, conference rooms, and a modern library, all designed to support a technology-driven learning environment. A key highlight is the planned 1000-seater auditorium, which will serve as a venue for international conferences, seminars, and institutional events, reinforcing IIFT’s global outreach.
Residential infrastructure forms a vital component of the campus design. A modern hostel complex will accommodate over 600 students, complete with dining, fitness, and recreational facilities, ensuring a comfortable and vibrant student life. Dedicated residential units for faculty members will further strengthen the sense of community and institutional cohesion.
Sustainability lies at the core of the project’s design philosophy. The campus aims to achieve a minimum 3-star GRIHA rating, incorporating energy-efficient systems such as LED lighting, solar photovoltaic installations, and advanced HVAC technologies. Passive design strategies will enable over 80 percent daylight utilization in regularly occupied spaces, significantly enhancing energy efficiency. Additionally, the project integrates rainwater harvesting, water recycling systems, low-impact construction materials, and efficient waste management practices, collectively reducing its ecological footprint.
Beyond academics and sustainability, the campus will offer robust infrastructure, including a two-level basement parking facility with capacity for over 400 vehicles, barrier-free access in line with universal design standards, advanced fire safety systems, and well-planned pedestrian and vehicular circulation networks. Landscaped courtyards, open spaces, and interconnected pathways will create an engaging and interactive campus environment, blending functionality with aesthetics.
For NBCC, this project represents yet another milestone in its extensive portfolio of institutional and government infrastructure. As a Navratna CPSE with proven expertise in executing large-scale projects, its involvement underscores both the ambition of the IIFT campus and the confidence reposed in its delivery capabilities.
The upcoming IIFT campus at Maidangarhi is poised to emerge as a benchmark for future-ready educational infrastructure—combining scale, sustainability, and strategic vision to support India’s growing role in global trade and academic excellence.
