Amdavad has secured the hosting rights for the World Weightlifting Championships 2029, marking a significant milestone in Gujarat’s efforts to strengthen its position as an international sporting destination. The announcement by the World Weightlifting Federation brings global attention to the city and adds momentum to its ambitions of hosting major international sporting events.
When contacted, Manoj Kumar Das, Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat, welcomed the landmark opportunity to bring a major global sporting event to Amdavad. He expressed hope that the city would soon secure the opportunity to host another world championship, further enhancing its standing on the international sporting map. He also viewed the development as a positive step towards Amdavad’s aspiration to host the Olympic Games in 2036.
Hosting the prestigious championship will be a first for Amdavad, offering the city an opportunity to welcome leading weightlifters from across the world. The event is expected to showcase Gujarat’s sporting infrastructure, organisational capabilities and hospitality to the international sporting community.
The achievement also underlines the growing opportunities for India to host major international sporting competitions. For Gujarat, the championship can help strengthen the sporting ecosystem, inspire young athletes and encourage wider participation in competitive sports.
The 2029 championship assumes added significance in the context of Amdavad’s Olympic ambitions. While hosting the Olympic Games in 2036 would involve a separate international selection process and extensive preparations, organising a major world championship could provide valuable experience in event management, infrastructure planning and coordination with international sporting bodies.
The immediate priority will be to translate the hosting opportunity into a successful event through careful planning, appropriate facilities, athlete-friendly arrangements and effective coordination among stakeholders.
With the World Weightlifting Championships 2029, Amdavad has gained an important opportunity to enhance its international sporting profile. The event could serve as a stepping stone in Gujarat’s broader efforts to establish the city as a destination for major global sporting competitions, while supporting its long-term Olympic aspirations.
