In a step towards strengthening India’s energy infrastructure, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and Coal India Limited (CIL) have entered into a strategic collaboration through the signing of a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU outlines a roadmap for the brownfield expansion of the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS) in Jharkhand.

As part of the proposed expansion, the two public sector giants plan to set up two ultra-supercritical thermal power units of 800 MW each, leveraging advanced technology to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions. The ultra-supercritical technology is known for its improved thermal efficiency, which contributes to reduced coal consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions per unit of electricity generated.

This collaboration is not limited to thermal power. DVC and CIL have also agreed to explore joint ventures in both thermal and renewable energy sectors, aligning with India’s broader vision of sustainable and balanced energy development. The move signifies a strategic synergy between CIL’s coal resource base and DVC’s expertise in power generation.

While the MoU is currently non-binding, it sets the stage for more detailed discussions and feasibility studies to be carried out in the coming months. The partnership is expected to unlock significant opportunities for boosting power supply in eastern India, especially in the industrial and mining belts of Jharkhand and surrounding regions.

This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s focus on enhancing energy security while simultaneously pursuing cleaner and more efficient power generation methods.
