Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), one of India’s leading integrated power utilities, has announced another year of impressive growth and achievements in FY 2024-25. The utility company, known for its commitment to excellence and sustainability, achieved a cumulative generation of 43,667 million units (MU) during the fiscal year. This includes a significant contribution from thermal, hydel, and solar power, underscoring DVC’s diversified energy generation portfolio.
Record-Breaking Thermal Generation
In FY 2024-25, DVC recorded its second-highest ever thermal power generation, totaling 43,370 MU. This remarkable feat was achieved with a plant load factor (PLF) of 75.7%. The performance was notably supported by the corporation’s thermal power stations, which regularly featured among the top 10 Central Sector stations for monthly PLF, with the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS) marking five appearances.
Additionally, DVC’s renewable energy initiatives were highlighted by a historic achievement in solar generation. With 16.8 MU produced, the company achieved its highest-ever solar power generation, demonstrating its commitment to clean and sustainable energy.
Biomass and Other Environmental Initiatives
DVC has also been at the forefront of environmentally responsible practices. The company has implemented biomass co-firing across all its units, a move that not only reduces carbon emissions but also optimizes fuel utilization. Further reinforcing its environmental commitments, DVC initiated gypsum lifting from thermal power stations at Bokaro, Durgapur Steel, Koderma, and Raghunathpur. The company has also embraced the RCR (Recycled Coarse Ash) mode for conditioning dry fly ash at the Koderma Thermal Power Station.
Coal and Fuel Supply Milestones
In terms of fuel supply, DVC achieved a notable milestone by producing 4 million metric tons (MMT) of coal from its captive coal mine in Tubed, Latehar district, Jharkhand. The company also received an impressive 7,853 coal rakes, surpassing the previous record of 7,613 rakes in FY 2023-24. The total quantity of coal received stood at 28.7 MMT, ensuring that DVC’s power generation units remained adequately fueled throughout the year.
Revenue and Financial Performance
DVC’s financial performance for FY 2024-25 was equally commendable. The corporation recorded a revenue collection of Rs. 25,320 crores, achieving an annual collection efficiency of 109%. Additionally, DVC showed a 5.95% increase in its water sales revenue, amounting to approximately Rs. 392 crores, further contributing to its impressive financial standing.
Strengthening Transmission and Distribution Networks: The company has also made significant strides in improving its transmission and distribution infrastructure. DVC commissioned several high-capacity substations, including two 220KV GIS substations at RTPS and MTPS, along with a 132KV GIS substation at Massilung, Jharkhand. The company also enhanced its transmission network with a 134 km 220KV transmission line and an 8 km 132KV line. Notably, DVC added 160 MVA in transformer capacity, reinforcing its ability to distribute power more efficiently.
Renewable Energy and Sustainable Practices: In line with its sustainability goals, DVC achieved 100% Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) compliance during FY 2024-25. This milestone highlights the company’s growing focus on green energy sources and its pivotal role in the transition to a more sustainable energy mix in India.
The utility also took a significant step in modernizing its distribution network with the commissioning of four state-of-the-art e-House 33/11kV substations in Dhanbad, Biada, Deoli, and Giridih. The Giridih substation was charged in a record 24 days, showcasing DVC’s commitment to fast-tracking projects for enhanced service delivery.
Expansion Plans and Workforce Growth : DVC’s ambitious expansion plans include the augmentation of its generation capacity with the addition of 2×800 MW units at Koderma TPS and 2×660 MW units at Raghunathpur TPS. Work on these projects has already commenced, signaling the company’s forward-looking approach in meeting the growing demand for electricity.
To support this expansion, DVC also undertook a large-scale recruitment drive in FY 2024-25, significantly increasing its workforce and ensuring that the company has the skilled manpower required for its long-term growth and success.
Recognition and Awards : DVC’s exceptional performance did not go unnoticed. The company and its power stations received multiple accolades during FY 2024-25. The Durgapur Steel Thermal Power Station (DSTPS) won the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Award for Excellence in Energy Management, while the same station was also recognized for having the “Best National Ash Handling Plant.”
Other notable awards included the “Best National Efficient Sewage Treatment Plant of the Year” for KTPS, and the “Best Thermal Power Performing Station” for both RTPS and MTPS from the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP).
In the realm of corporate social responsibility, DVC bagged the Champions’ Trophy at XLRI Jamshedpur for its “Best HR Practices,” further solidifying its reputation as a responsible corporate entity.
