Mumbai, April 02, 2025: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s premier port, has achieved a new milestone in the fiscal year 2024-25, handling a record-breaking 7.3 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in container throughput. This remarkable feat marks a 13.55% growth over the previous financial year, setting a new benchmark for India’s maritime industry.

During a stakeholders’ meeting followed by a celebration of this success, Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairman of JNPA, and Chairman & Managing Director of VPPL, took the opportunity to applaud the hard work of terminal operators and the seamless collaboration across the port. He remarked, “JNPA’s record handling of 7.3 million TEUs in FY 2024-25 reflects its evolution as a model port, setting benchmarks in efficiency, sustainability, and global competitiveness. The numbers speak not only to volume but also to the dedication across terminals, the trust of our trade partners, and the synchronized efforts that ensure smooth operations at India’s gateway port.”

The port’s exceptional performance highlights the integration of innovative technologies and sustainable practices that have kept JNPA at the forefront of port-led development. The growth story is also testament to the unwavering commitment of JNPA’s terminal operators in advancing trade facilitation and operational excellence.

Terminal-Wise Performance Highlights
– BMCT (Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal): BMCT has seen an unprecedented rise in container traffic, achieving the highest ever handling of 2.27 million TEUs in FY 2024-25. The terminal broke its own record with 222,201 TEUs handled in March 2025, solidifying its position as one of the highest performing terminals at JNPA.

-APMT (Arabian Port and Marine Terminal): APMT continued its strong performance, handling 2.08 million TEUs, maintaining its position as a key player in container handling with a growth of 30.88% over the previous year.

– NSFT (Nhava Sheva Free Trade): Handling 594,260 TEUs in FY 2024-25, NSFT achieved a 5.71% increase from the previous year, reflecting the terminal’s sustained efforts to improve its throughput.

– NSICT (Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal) and NSIGT (Nhava Sheva International Gateway Terminal) also showed positive growth, handling 1.21 million and 1.13 million TEUs, respectively, with an increase of 6.67% and 1.91%.

– NSDT (Nhava Sheva Dry Port Terminal): Achieved a remarkable 157.23% increase in throughput, handling 20,445 TEUs—a significant rise from 7,948 TEUs last year.

Key Highlights of FY 2024-2025:

– BMCT achieved its highest-ever container handling record of 222,201 TEUs in March 2025, leading the charge in throughput at JNPA.

– APMT maintained a strong terminal position by handling 2.08 million TEUs, securing its spot as a leading terminal operator.

– NSDT made a significant contribution to bulk cargo, handling 1.8 million tonnes of cement and 0.45 million tonnes of steel.

– JNPA also marked a milestone with Centralized Parking Plaza (CPP), which saw a record 105,850 TEUs handled in March 2025, a notable rise from 98,249 TEUs in March 2023.

– Phase-2 operations at BMCT began in February 2025, enhancing the terminal’s capacity and operational efficiency.

– The port registered the highest-ever rail volume at 1,078,315 TEUs, surpassing last year’s volume of 1,076,152 TEUs, showcasing its continued focus on improving multimodal transport.

– JJLTPL commenced operations at its liquid terminal in November 2024, further expanding JNPA’s diverse operational footprint.

Stakeholder Engagement and Future Planning: The stakeholders’ meeting served as a platform for dialogue among key players in the port and logistics ecosystem. Attendees included terminal operators like BMCT, APMT, NSFT, NSDT, and JJLTPL, alongside representatives from trade bodies such as CSLA, MANSA, CFSAI, and BCBA. The meeting facilitated discussions on the port’s future strategies, focusing on harnessing the momentum of this record performance while addressing the evolving needs of the sector.

Key discussions revolved around enhancing operational efficiency, integrating more sustainable practices, and strengthening the port’s role in India’s growing trade network. Moving forward, JNPA aims to further optimize its infrastructure, embrace technological advancements, and continue supporting India’s position as a global maritime hub.
