The celebrations reflected a strong commitment to incorporating yoga into daily life and promoting a healthier and more balanced society.
The state-level event was organized by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board at the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre in Bhopal. Participants also virtually connected with the national celebration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Kolkata, West Bengal. His inspiring address added energy and significance to the occasion.
Addressing participants, Modi described yoga as an essential tool for world peace and a better future. He emphasized that yoga unites people, fosters collective well-being, and serves as a foundation for human unity when embraced as a way of life. He highlighted yoga’s unique ability to create balance between physical fitness and mental wellness.
The event witnessed active participation from Tourism Secretary and Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, Dr. Ilaiyaraja T., Additional Managing Director Dr. Abhay Bedekar, medical experts, officers, and employees of the Tourism Board. Dr. Ankesh Bhadauria of Sant Hirdaram Medical College also participated in the programme.
Yoga: A Path to Healthy and Balanced Living
Extending greetings on International Yoga Day, Dr. Ilaiyaraja T. stated that the Tourism Department views yoga not merely as a health activity but as a rich cultural, spiritual, and philosophical heritage deeply connected to Indian values. He noted that yoga teaches discipline, self-confidence, and the art of living a meaningful life.
Dr. Abhay Bedekar urged citizens to make yoga an integral part of their daily routine. He emphasized that regular yoga practice can contribute significantly to building a healthy, happy, and prosperous society. He called upon participants to take a collective pledge to practice yoga regularly.
“Yoga for Healthy Ageing” Inspires Participants
This year’s International Yoga Day was observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting the importance of maintaining physical and mental well-being throughout life. A special feature of the programme was the enthusiastic participation of senior citizens from Seva Samiti Old Age Home, who joined tourism officials in the collective yoga session.
A trained team from Sant Hirdaram Ayurvedic and Naturopathy Institute conducted the session according to the Common Yoga Protocol prescribed by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. Participants practiced prayer, warm-up exercises, yoga postures, pranayama, meditation, and concluding prayers. The event concluded with a collective pledge to adopt a healthy and balanced lifestyle through regular yoga practice.
Yoga Celebrations at Iconic Tourism Destinations
The spirit of yoga extended far beyond the state capital, with large-scale participation witnessed at some of Madhya Pradesh’s most celebrated tourism destinations.
Collective yoga sessions were organized at iconic locations including Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Sanchi Stupa, Udayagiri Caves, Gwalior Fort, 56 Dukan and Tamia. Tourism Board officials performed yoga at the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre, while officers of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation participated in sessions at Bhopal’s Boat Club.
Students and local residents were encouraged to understand the importance of yoga for physical fitness, mental peace, and emotional resilience. The programmes showcased how tourism destinations can serve as ideal settings for wellness-oriented activities, combining natural beauty, heritage, and healthy living.
A Global Movement Rooted in India
International Yoga Day has become one of the most widely celebrated global observances since its inception. Following an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the United Nations adopted a resolution on December 11, 2014, declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day. The first official celebration was held worldwide on June 21, 2015.
Today, yoga has emerged as one of India’s most influential contributions to humanity, transcending borders and cultures. The International Yoga Day 2026 celebrations across Madhya Pradesh reaffirmed the state’s commitment to promoting wellness tourism, healthy ageing, and the timeless values of India’s yoga tradition, inspiring people of all ages to embrace a healthier and more harmonious way of life.
