National HR Summit on TRANSFORMING HR: INDIAN POWER SECTOR

NHRD network, Power HR forum organized its National HR Summit on the theme “Transforming HR in Indian Power Sector” in New Delhi today.The objective of the Summit was to examine and deliberate some urgent and important HR issues in order to re-align HR, focusing on the much needed transformation to meet the emerging changes and challenges in Indian Power Sector of today‘s dynamic VUCA world, in the coming decade.There were HR professionals from leading companies of the power sector- NTPC Ltd, Human Capital Consulting, Energy InfratechPvt Ltd, Central Electricity authority and many others.
Mr. U P Pani, President – Power HR Forum& Director (HR), NTPC Ltd provided vision of the theme of the summit with a brief overview of the power sector and its growth rate of 8.5% from 2014-15 to 2015-16 followed by his thoughts on the immense opportunities available in the power sector.
The Theme Alignment was given by Mr. Ajit Mathai, Director, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt. Ltd. With his innovative presentation, he covered the three important areas- “Challenges of Changing Power Sector Scenario”, “ Working for Talent Management” , “Building Leadership Pipeline for Delivering Success”.

The Keynote Speaker, Mr. R.V. Shahi, Chairman, Energy Infratech Pvt. Ltd gave his enlightening views on “ How HR can shake and bring success for any company”. According to him, the HR transforms the people and personality of the organization. HRM is behind each and every thing in the company.

The Inaugural Session of the summit started with the welcome address by Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH. He extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest, speakers and other delegates.

The Inaugural Address by Chief Guest,Padma Shri Dr. Pritam Singh, Chairman – LEAD Centre gave a new direction to the summit. He emphasized on the fact that the name of HR should be changed to Organizational Development. Further he suggested the next conference to be from the Energy Sector. He also expressed his views to replace “Make in India” with “Innovate in India”. He concluded his address by saying that “It istime for the HR to demonstrate that “You need us”.

The panel discussion on the topic- “Challenges of Changing Power Sector Scenario” hadf Dr. Anil Sardana, MD, Tata Power, Mr. A K Jha, CMD, NTPC Ltd., Dr. Ashok Balyan, CEO – Oil & Gas Business, Reliance Group, Mr. Atul Sobti, CMD, BHEL, Mr. S K Chaturvedi, Chairman, Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission as panelists. The Chairman & Moderatorwas Mr. R.V. Shahi, Chairman, Energy Infratech Pvt. Ltd.The panel discussed various problems and their possible solutions pertaining to different areas of HR in power sector. Distribution system is an important part of the power sector. They came out with a viewpoint that privatization is not the only solution to every problem. Holistic approach should be theneed of the hour. They discussed that HR changes and challenges are cross-cutting, impacting all the sectors of the economy and industries. Any integrated Power sector planning has to take into account different scenarios and also the strategies to deal with them. Similarly, any HR Policy has to accommodate the HR implications of the different Power scenarios. The discussion was followed by a Q&A round by all the delegates present in the summit. It was a very healthy discussion focusing on the important facets of the changing power sector.

The last session “Working for Talent Management” had Mr. Vinod Behari, CEO, Power Sector Skill Council of India, Mr. DeepakBharara, CHRO, LANCO InfraTech, Mr. V.C. Agarwal, President-HR, RPG Enterprises, Mr. R K Verma, Chief Engineer – Distribution, Central Electricity Authority as panelists .

The fourth session of the summit is on the theme“Building Leadership Pipeline for Delivering Success”. The panelists for this session were Mr. U.P. Pani, Director (HR), NTPC Ltd., Dr. Asha Bhandarker,Distinguished Professor of Organizational Behaviour, IMI, Mr. S K Biswas, Director (Personnel), THDC India Ltd, Mr. ChetanTolia, CHRO, Tata Power, Mr. Raj Kumar Roy, President (Head), LANCO Solar.
