Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) proudly announces a major step forward in India’s clean energy transition with the commencement of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) gas supply from the North Karanpura block in Jharkhand. This marks the beginning of CBM distribution to the City Gas Distribution (CGD) sectors of Hazaribagh and Ranchi, as allocated by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.
This notable milestone has been made possible through strategic collaboration with our joint venture partners — Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Prabha Energy Limited — and valued business partners GAIL India and Indian Oil-Adani Gas Pvt. Ltd.
Delivering Clean Energy to Remote Regions
The North Karanpura CBM initiative aligns with the Government of India’s vision of providing cleaner, greener energy to all, including the most remote regions of the country. By bringing natural gas infrastructure closer to underserved areas, ONGC and its partners are not only contributing to environmental sustainability but also empowering local economies with reliable, affordable energy access.
Expanding the Reach via Urja Ganga Pipeline
Looking ahead, the North Karanpura CBM field is set to be integrated with the Urja Ganga Pipeline — a flagship initiative aimed at enhancing India’s gas-based economy. This connection will enable ONGC to expand CBM supply to a broader network of CGD areas, accelerating the nationwide shift toward clean fuel alternatives.
A Milestone in India’s Energy Journey
The start of CBM supply from North Karanpura represents more than a technological achievement — it’s a reaffirmation of ONGC’s commitment to energy innovation and sustainability. As India charts its course toward a greener future, ONGC stands ready to lead the way with pioneering projects that harness domestic resources for national progress.
