Special Feature on World Physical Therapy Day.

World Physical Therapy Day-This day is an opportunity for physiotherapists (physical therapists) from all over the world to raise awareness about the critical contribution the profession makes to keeping people well, mobile and independent.

I feel it is our responsibility as physical therapists to educate people about the advantages of being physically active. Across the world, more than a million physical therapists have an opportunity to educate, enable and empower people of all ages to increase their physical activity.

“Being physically active in the current environment we live in is absolutely essential for health and well being. It is also clear that this is a challenge for many people in the current day and age, as our lifestyles have changed so much. Our environments where we work, play and learn are not always conducive to being physically active, and working or sitting for long hours in one place, or in one posture has a negative impact, however there are lots of simple ways to incorporate physical activity into our busy lives. And that’s what World Physical Therapy Day is all about.”

If you want to keep healthy, keep moving – all through your life. The top ten benefits which I see are the following:

Physical activity helps you live longer and helps prevent many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipid (cholesterol and triglyceride) profile, stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, colon and breast cancers.
Improves cardio-respiratory and muscular fitness.
Raises your metabolism, and helps you lose weight more easily (or eat more without gaining weight).
Reduces stress, anxiety, and depression and improves your mood.
Maintains brain function in older adults.
Helps Digestion and promotes regular bowel movements.
Increases bone density.
You age more gracefully by maintaining your looks and your agility.
Improves sleep quality.
Improves your overall quality of life.

Every year, Physical Therapists help millions of people prevent conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer by recommending safe and appropriate exercise programmes. They help people commit to and celebrate physical activity for life.

Celebrate Physical Activity for Life says Dr. Ridwana Sanam.
