NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company, has entered a new phase of leadership transition with the appointment of Sanjay Kumar Singh, director (projects), as interim chairman and managing director (CMD). The Ministry of Power approved the appointment effective September 1, 2025, following the superannuation of Rajendra Prasad, who had led the company since July. Singh will hold the role for one month or until a full-time CMD is named.
Sanjay Kumar Singh, who assumed charge as director (projects) on July 24, 2024, has played a pivotal role in advancing NHPC’s major initiatives. He also serves as chairman of NHPC Renewable Energy Ltd and Jalpower Corporation Ltd, both wholly-owned subsidiaries, and is a nominee director on the boards of Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd and Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd, joint ventures with the Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Ltd (JKSPDCL).
Under his leadership as director (projects), NHPC has made significant progress in the 800 MW Pārbati-II hydroelectric project and the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower hydroelectric project, along with several other strategic projects under execution. Singh also held additional charge as director (technical) between August 2024 and April 2025. A civil engineer with over 33 years of experience in the power and infrastructure sector, he began his career with SJVN Ltd, where he rose to the position of chief general manager before moving to NHPC.
Alongside Singh’s appointment, the government has entrusted Sipan Kumar Garg with the additional responsibility of interim director (finance), NHPC, also effective September 1, 2025. Garg, who currently serves as director (finance) of THDC India Ltd, another state-owned power utility, will continue his present duties while overseeing NHPC’s finance portfolio for three months or until a regular appointment is made.
A seasoned finance professional, Garg is a chartered accountant, cost accountant, company secretary, and law graduate. His expertise in corporate finance, governance, and regulatory compliance is expected to strengthen NHPC’s financial management during this transitional phase.
The appointments of Singh and Garg mark an important chapter for NHPC as it continues to expand its renewable and hydroelectric power portfolio, reinforcing its role as a key contributor to India’s energy security and clean energy ambitions.
